There's much to see here. So, take your time, look around, and learn all about 4th Infantry Division in Vietnam. You will find a number of additional 4th ID Field Artillery links.
My name is Roy D Ratliff. I was with the 4th Infantry Division 5th Battalion 16th Regiment Field Artillery (B) Battery - M109 - 155 mm SP's. I was in Vietnam from June 1968 to August 1969. Our unit was mostly in the Central Highlands the majority of the time. Most of my memories are of Kontum and west of Kontum at an air strip, and an Old French fort/compound that was close to our FB where Green Berets and Arvin's were and a Montagnard village area called Polei Kleng or L.Z. Bass.
I can remember in March of 69 we had 122 rockets and mortars come in on our fire base every day about lunch time for about a week or more. On March 9th we lost four men in one of those rocket attacks, Tim Carrol (Stoney), Bobby Rollins, Joe Mears and Timothy (Tim) Hurley and three others were wounded. We went to several places on Hip Shoots - Dak-To, Ben-Het, Ban Me Thot and others.
A lot of good friends with the Red Legs chapter of the 4th Infantry Division helped us find a lot of men that were with the 5/16th Field Artillery in A, B, C & D batteries. If you were with the 5/16th Field Artillery in Vietnam, the Redlegs and I would very much like to talk to you and maybe recall some things together. If you were with 3/16th Field Artillery in Afghanistan or Iraq or are currently serving with the 3/16th FA as part of the 4th ID, I would also be pleased to hear from you.
For many years, I never thought of Vietnam very much or had a whole lot of memories, and I had a friend ask me if I had ever tried to reach out to anyone I had been with in Vietnam. I started looking into the 4th Infantry Division and went to the National Convention in Tennessee in August of 2014. Since meeting some of the guys there, Officers and Cannon Cockers like me, in the Redlegs Chapter it has been like a healing to me. I met some really great guys, guys that understood what it was like for us there. We all have our own story but it is such a feeling of brotherhood that I now cherish.
Thanks for taking the time to read this and I hope you reach out to us!
Welcome Home my fellow Veterans!!

I was XO of C Btry, then Asst S-3. I went over with the battalion from fort Lewis. It might be interesting to note that many of the men who went over to Vietnam with us received both their basic training and AIT at Fort Lewis. Anyway, here are the pics. Early Camp Inari: Majors Mactagone, S3, Bill Benagh, S4 and LTC Mike Citrak, BN Commander. Myself and Captain Clark Meeks, C Btry BC. Unfortunately, me again with one of our guns at Plei Mrong.
